Overview
The OU EPSCoR Native American Summer Science Program is a dynamic summer research opportunity for Native American undergraduate students who are interested in learning about the connection between microbiology and the Earth. Goals The goal of the summer program is to support the academic, career, and personal development of Native American students who are interested in careers in science. Students will work closely with OU professors and graduate students to gain experience in the areas of microbiology, geology, and chemistry with regard to studying the microbial cycling of methane, an important greenhouse gas. The program will include visiting natural ecosystems including a methane-producing spring, as well as local lakes and ponds. Students will learn how to collect field samples, measure environmental parameters, test whether microorganisms are involved in methane cycling, and analyze and summarize data. Eligibility & Compensation University of Oklahoma and non-University of Oklahoma undergraduate students who identify as Native American are encouraged to register. No previous research experience is required. The OU EPSCoR Native American Summer Science Program is funded by a National Science Foundation grant and will provide participants with housing and food costs while at OU. The application period for the NIH Community College Summer Enrichment Program closes on March 1. These are premiere programs that would do wonders for your resume, scholarship applications, and professional or academic career. Check out the CCSEP web site for details on how to apply. You can complete one application, which is good for more than one program. The 2017 program topics include biomedical research, biomedical engineering, and genetics.
In addition to the summer enrichment programs, NIH also sponsors undergraduate scholarships to students from disadvantages backgrounds. In addition to scholarship support, the program supports paid research training at the NIH during the summer and after graduation.
